Here’s some information about these turtles and their nesting seasons in Kosi Bay

Turtle Species

Kosi Bay in South Africa is known for its significant turtle nesting and hatching events, mainly involving loggerhead and leatherback turtles.

Here’s some information about these turtles and their nesting seasons in Kosi Bay

loggerhead turtles hippos rest

Loggerhead Turtles

They are the most common species nesting along the Kosi Bay coastline. They typically nest from October to February.

leatherback turtles hippos rest

Leatherback Turtles

Although less frequent, leatherback turtles also nest in Kosi Bay. Their nesting season overlaps with that of loggerheads, generally occurring from November to January.

Nesting Process

Laying Eggs

Female turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs, digging nests in the sandy beaches. They lay a clutch of eggs (usually around 100 eggs for loggerheads and fewer for leatherbacks) before covering the nest and returning to the ocean.

Incubation

The eggs are left to incubate in the warm sand for about 60-70 days, depending on the species and environmental conditions.

turtle hatching

Hatching

Hatchlings Emergence: After the incubation period, hatchlings emerge from the nests. This usually occurs at night to reduce exposure to predators and heat.

guidedbysea

Guided to Sea

Hatchlings instinctively move towards the brightest horizon, which, under natural conditions, is the moonlit sea. Artificial lights can disorient them, so efforts are made to minimize light pollution during hatching season.

Experienced turtle trackers

Experienced turtle trackers independently operate walking tours along the beaches of Kosi Bay.

Visitors have the opportunity to meet local turtle trackers at the Bhanga Nek Turtle Research Station.
